While there are decent bars in downtown Tampa, the real nightlife is in Ybor City (about 20 minutes by cab or free tram from downtown Tampa).

Great craft beer in a cool relaxing environment with occasional live music. A block off 7th Avenue.

Club Prana is the hottest club now in Tampa. Prana is a Miami style nightclub  with five floors each with different music and style.

Conclusion

Ybor City has the best nightlife in Tampa and its all packed in about 10 blocks around 7th Avenue (“La Setima”). For such a small area the diversity of options is staggering. So if its pool hall, live music, brewery, lounge, speakeasy, college, cigar, hip hop, LQBTQIA or karaoke bar it is there.
