The High Line is a mile and half long park built on an abandoned elevated subway track on the west side of Manhattan in New York City. The abandoned rail line has been redesigned as a “living system” drawing from multiple disciplines which include landscape architecture, urban design and ecology.
Since it opened in 2009, the High Line has become an icon of American contemporary landscape architecture. By 2019, it had eight million visitors per year.
Where to get on
The Highline runs along the west side of Manhattan. You can get on at either end; downtown in the Meat Packing District at Washington & Gansevoort Street (near 14th street) or in Midtown at the Hudson Yards (around 34th Street and 11th Ave). There are also a few places along the way to get on and off and elevators at each end so it is accessible for those with disabilities.
Along the trail are a number of art installations
There are few places along the trail to sit down and relax.
Also near the downtown end are a few places to eat food.
Each side has tourist attractions so plan you walk on what you want to see and do at each end. At Hudson Yards there is the Edge Observation Deck, the architectural attraction the Vessel (see below) and a large shopping mall with restaurants.
At the downtown end, there is the Whitney Museum, Little Island Park, Chelsea Market and you can explore the Chelsea and Greenwich Village neighborhoods from here.
Conclusion
The Highline is a pleasant walk and gets you away from the traffic. There is art, nice views and greenery. If you are near or going to an attractions nearby you should definitely hop on.
