When in the coffee capital of the world, you should, of course visit a coffee farm. There are a number of farms in the hills around Salento. I went to Las Acacias Coffee Farm which is easy to reach, by 10 minutes by taxi, 30 minutes by horseback or walk about an hour. Here they teach you the whole process. from which beans are good and how they pick them to the sorting and processing. It is in a nice setting and a fun walk around the farm with beautiful views and flowers. At the end you can taste their different coffee flavors and enjoy the view.
We even went into fields and picked some beans ourselves.
I was surprised at the number of beautiful flowers around the coffee farm on the trail.
The tour was about 45 minutes and very thorough, they have tours in English and Spanish.
We took the horseback tour from the main plaza. There was no schedule we just ask for the horseback tour to the coffee farm and they made a call and the horses were brought to the plaza in 10 minutes. We rode about 10 minutes through the town and then another 20 minutes on a nice trail to the farm. You can arrange this from the horseback ride people in Plaza Bolivar (look for the blue tent)
Conclusion
The coffee farm is a nice relaxing day in the fresh air and a must on the Salento trail for its excellent coffee which you get to learn about and then relax and drink. There are a number of coffee farms and options to get there; walk, horseback, taxi or ATV. Enjoy yourself and let us know if you have any comments, questions or recommendations.
