Minca, Colombia – the chill mountain town to lose yourself in

Minca is a highlight of Colombia and must see if you are near. This is the place where you escape the world and chill. It has been a secret backpacker place for a while but the secret is getting out.  Just a 40 minute drive from Santa Marta (60,000 COP by taxi) or 4 1/2 drive from Cartagena is the relaxing town of Minca. In the middle of lush mountains with beautiful nature, waterfalls to swim at, bird watching, numerous hiking options, tubing, coffee and cocoa plantations and craft beer make this a perfect place to unwind from the world.

Marinka Waterfalls

At the edge of town about a 10 minute drive and then a 30 minute walk up a trail (or pay a motorcycle taxi to drive you up in 10 minutes) are the Marinka Waterfalls. Two beautiful waterfalls you can swim at.

There is a little restaurant here and changing rooms and these nets above the waterfall to rest on.

Coffee Tour- La Victoria Farm

A scenic twenty minute drive up the mountain brings you to some coffee plantations.  The most famous is La Victoria Coffe Farm started in 1892. Here you can take a tour to see how they pick and process the coffee and then stop in their tasting room for coffee and cake. The Nevada Craft Brewery in next door, unfortunately no tours at this time, but you can buy their craft beer at La Victoria.

Cocoa- Farm San Rafael

About a twenty minute drive outside the town is Finca San Rafael which makes cocoa, coffee and some other local nuts.  There is a tour which takes you on a little hike up the mountain to see the plants and growing areas, then back to the main house to see the processing and have some nice hot chocolate.

If you go later in the day you can see some amazing sunsets from here.  This is also a hostel with a little pool and cafe so if you want to get off the grid and relax with nice people this is the place. If you would like to stay here check San Rafael Farm.

Craft Beer

As mentioned Minca is becoming known for its craft beer or as its known there “Cerveza Artesanal”, the best place to sample these is the cute Lazy Cat Restaurant (see picture below) which also has a nice outdoor patio and excellent food.

It is a cute town to wander around and has a very relaxed and friendly vibe.

Conclusion

Minca was one of the highlights of my travel. Definitely plan a couple days to relax and experience its charm. I wish I had spent a little more time there. For those looking to get away from the grind of the world, here is the spot.  Let me know your experience and any new spots or tours you find in this charming spot for others to enjoy!
