Tejo- Beer, disc throwing and explosives

What is Tejo? It is the National Sport of Colombia which involves throwing a metal disc ( a “Tejo”) at small explosives which are paper with some combustable material on a metal ring all while knocking down beers. Generally the cost of the game is the cost of the beers, not a court rental fee.

Tejo traces its origin back to the indigenous people of Colombia who played with gold and when you won you took your opponents gold.  Of course, when the Spanish came they took that gold so they had to switch to metal. The legend is that while the Spanish were conquering Colombia they came upon indigenous people in the village of Turmequé and discovered this game which they enjoyed so much they decided not to kill the Turmequé people which is why Tejo is sometimes also known as turmequé

The game is now played throughout Colombia and a little bit in the surrounding countries and Spain.

We played rounds to get to 10 points.  You get 9 points if you get the Tejo in the circle with an explosion, 3 for an explosion with the Tejo landing outside the circle and 1 point for the Tejo closest to the ring if no one gets an explosion.  To better understand the rules, listen to El Gringo below:
